From old to new

Website redesign without losing your place in Google

Is your site outdated, slow or hard to keep up to date? Then you want a website redesign, but not to start over in Google. I build a fast, modern site, make sure your old addresses redirect properly and hold on to what already ranks well.

What you get

  • A new site in one of the three packages: Starter, Business or Business Plus
  • An overview of your current site: which pages and addresses exist, and what ranks well
  • Redirects from your old addresses to the new pages, including old PDF links
  • Rewritten copy, based on your old site and what you tell me
  • Switching your DNS to the new site once, while your email keeps working
  • Everything in your package, such as extra languages at no extra cost and two feedback rounds
  • With Business and Business Plus: Search Console and Bing set up, so you can see how Google picks up your new site

Not included

  • Moving a lot of content, such as a large blog archive. That's listed separately in your proposal
  • Moving old email to a new mailbox. That's possible at my hourly rate
  • A new logo or brand identity
  • A guarantee on your positions in Google
  • Ongoing SEO work after launch

Exactly what is and is not included is set out in the terms.

Who it's for

You have an old WordPress site

Something always needs updating, plugins cause trouble and the site feels slow. You want to move on without losing everything.

Your site no longer fits you

Your business has changed, but your site still tells the old story. The copy is out of date and the design looks tired.

People already find you

People find you through Google, and you want to keep it that way. You want a redesign without visitors landing on an error page.

Why redesign your website?

Many small business websites were built years ago, often in WordPress. They still work, but they're slow on a phone, the copy is out of date and there's always another plugin asking for an update.

A new site solves that. I build with modern technology (Next.js): fast, secure and without plugins that keep needing updates. I rewrite your copy with you, so it fits what you do today.

The biggest worry with a redesign is almost always the same: will I lose my place in Google? It doesn't have to happen, if you go about it carefully.

A website redesign that keeps you findable

Google knows your old site by its addresses, such as yoursite.com/services/coaching. If that address changes, a visitor from Google lands on an error page. Google notices that too, and after a while the page drops away.

So I make a list of all your old addresses, including stray PDFs that are linked from somewhere. Each old address then redirects automatically to the new page that matches it. Visitors, links from other sites and Google all end up in the right place. For The Diversity Company that meant over 40 old addresses.

I also look at what works well now. If you have Google Search Console or analytics, I can see which pages attract visitors and for which search terms. I keep those topics in the new site.

Nobody can guarantee your positions. After a move, your site may wobble in Google for a while. Good redirects keep that as small as possible. Read more in moving your website without losing SEO.

Your domain and email stay yours

Your domain name stays in your name. If it's with your own provider, I switch the DNS settings to the new site once. You either give me access, or make the changes yourself following my instructions. If you'd rather not think about it any more, I take over the domain for €25 a year, alongside your Hosting or Care. DNS is a kind of address book for the internet: it tells the world where your website and your email live.

Your email keeps working throughout, including on the day of the switch. Want a new business mailbox anyway? That's possible for €5 per mailbox per month.

Be careful when you cancel your old hosting. If your email is in the same package, it stops too. So only cancel the old package once you know where your email will run. There's more in domain names and DNS explained.

What does a redesign cost?

A redesign doesn't have its own price. You choose one of the three packages, just as with a new site: Starter (€795) for a single page, Business (€1,495) for up to 8 pages, or Business Plus (€2,495) for up to about 20 pages with your own content editor. Redirecting your old addresses is part of the redesign.

If you have a large blog archive or a great many old pages, I check up front how much work it is to move them. That's then listed separately in your proposal, so there are no surprises.

How it works

  1. 1

    Intro call

A free 30-minute call. You show me your current site and tell me what needs to improve.

  2. 2

    Proposal

You get the right package, a fixed price and a schedule. Agreed? You pay half and I start.

  3. 3

    Build

I list your old addresses, rewrite the copy with you and build the new site. You follow along on a preview while your old site stays online.

  4. 4

    Feedback

You send your comments in one go and I process them. Two feedback rounds are included in the price.

  5. 5

    Switch-over

I switch the DNS, the redirects go live and so does your new site. Your email keeps working. Then you pay the second half.

An example

Example: The Diversity Company

The Diversity Company had an outdated WordPress site and wanted something clean, warm and calm, without losing search visibility. I built a new site in Dutch and English. Over 40 old addresses, including old PDF links, now redirect automatically to the new pages. Afterwards I handed the site over to their own IT partner, who now hosts it.

Frequently asked questions

Does my old site stay online until the new one is ready?

Yes. I build the new site on a preview address. Only when you approve it do I switch the DNS. Until then, your visitors notice nothing.

Can I reuse my old copy?

Yes, as a starting point. I use it together with what you tell me to write new copy that fits what you do today. You read and approve everything.

My site runs on WordPress. Will I still be able to change things myself?

Yes, if you choose Business Plus. You then get your own custom content editor, without plugins to keep updated. With Starter and Business I make the changes for you.

How long does a website redesign take?

That depends on the package. A one-pager is often live within a week, Business takes 1 to 2 weeks and Business Plus 2 to 3 weeks. A redesign adds the work of mapping your old addresses. Beyond that, it mostly depends on how quickly you give feedback.
